julie jordan; virgo
“so when he wants your kisses, you will give them to the lad. and anywhere he leads you, you will walk. and anytime he needs you, you’ll go runnin’ there like mad.“
virgos are practical and reliable; as seen immensely in her act II ballad "what’s the use of wonderin’”. julie is an internal being. although not always wise, she weighs out her options before acting upon them and expressing her feelings. to the world, virgos are calm and collected, but their minds are running wild. when julie tells billy she is going to have his baby, she sits him down and gives him his coffee before breaking the news to him, plain and simple: “i’m going to have a baby”. ever-faithful, julie sticks with billy from the beginning of the play (defying her boss from the mill) to the end (remaining unwed after his death, etc.)
“i’m never gonna marry and a girl who don’t marry has got to be much more pa-ticular"
in the beginning of the story, julie claims she will never marry and therefore has to be careful of her character. virgos are modest perfectionists. she is conscious of the way the world views her and takes care in that. she even gets a little embarrassed when she is revealed to be pregnant with her husband’s child ("it’s perfectly natural when two people live together”).
overall, virgos try to make the world a better place to live in. julie continues to make the best of her situation from the beginning of the show until the end, finding strength in herself and those who love her.
